The Newark Museum of Art
The Client:
The Newark Museum of Art is New Jersey’s largest art and culture institution, and one of the oldest. Their global art collection is ranked 12th among North America’s art museums, housed on a campus that also includes a planetarium, garden, mansion, maker-space and fire museum. It’s a true culture gem in the city of Newark.
The Problem:
In 2019, Newark Museum went through a rebranding with Big Duck (Advomatic’s sister agency) and emerged as “The Newark Museum of Art.” With this change came a new look and feel: new color palette, fonts, logo, tagline, and other language that needed to be applied to the website to coincide with events and the release of print materials.
Efficiently applying new institutional branding
Instead of creating a whole new website (which would take considerable time and money), we did a website “refresh.” This meant we would only edit the styles of the sites — not make changes to the layout or content of the website. As part of this process, Advomatic updated the colors, fonts, common elements, and a few other elements. With a new bright color scheme, it definitely created a “refreshed” website.
We streamlined the process by doing much of the initial work using “in-browser” design, which means we did not create traditional designs in Photoshop or Illustrator. Rather, we made the code changes inside the browser. We primarily revised the major page components, and, once the designs were approved, we moved the changes into the code base. While this solution isn’t right for all projects, it is a very lean way to move a website refresh from concept to reality.
